This role is critical to the smooth functioning of airport ground operations, involving direct interaction with aircraft on the ramp and the handling of cargo, baggage, and other materials. Ramp Agents work outdoors in various weather conditions and in a fast-paced setting, ensuring that aircraft are serviced efficiently and safely to meet tight departure schedules. They collaborate closely with other ground operations teams to provide legendary customer service and uphold the high standards Southwest Airlines is known for. This position is offered on a part-time basis, typically involving 32 hours across 5 days weekly, with working hours assigned based on seniority. New hires undergo 4 to 6 weeks of comprehensive training combining classroom instruction and on-the-job experience. Following training, part-time Ramp Agents generally work 6.5-hour shifts with the possibility of mandatory overtime. This role requires a flexible schedule covering early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Ramp Agents are responsible for multiple tasks including loading and unloading baggage and cargo, operating motorized equipment, assisting with aircraft servicing duties like lavatory and cabin cleaning, and maintaining a secure and organized ramp environment. They must be vigilant about safety, follow procedures closely, and communicate effectively with coworkers and external contacts. The job demands physical stamina for lifting heavy items, climbing stairs, and working in various weather conditions.
