We strive to seamlessly blend high-level AI capabilities with the constraints of physical systems to improve peoples’ lives.<br><br><strong>About The Role<br><br></strong>As the Robotics 3D Printing Lab Technician, you will own the day-to-day operation of our additive manufacturing lab and help enable rapid hardware iteration across the robotics organization. You’ll manage and maintain a fleet of 3D printers, develop workflows for engineers to submit and track builds, and ensure high-quality prototype parts are delivered quickly and reliably.<br><br>You will partner closely with mechanical, electrical, and prototype engineering teams to support fast-paced robotics development. Beyond additive manufacturing, you will also contribute as a hands-on prototype technician supporting builds, rework, subsystem integration, and general lab operations across robotic systems.<br><br>This role is based in San Francisco, CA, and requires in-person presence 5 days a week.<br><br><strong>In This Role, You Will<br><br></strong><ul><li>Lead operation, maintenance, and calibration of a fleet of 3D printers supporting robotics prototyping efforts</li><li>Develop and maintain workflows for print submission, prioritization, tracking, and delivery across engineering teams</li><li>Prepare, process, and optimize print jobs across a variety of additive manufacturing technologies and materials</li><li>Perform post-processing operations including support removal, finishing, bonding, machining, dyeing, and assembly preparation</li><li>Inspect completed parts for dimensional accuracy, cosmetic quality, and print integrity before delivery to engineers</li><li>Partner with engineering teams to provide guidance on material selection, print orientation, tolerancing, and manufacturability</li><li>Manage inventory of printing materials, consumables, spare parts, and maintenance supplies to ensure high printer uptime</li><li>Support rapid prototyping workflows by assisting with mechanical builds, subsystem integration, and general prototype technician work</li><li>Troubleshoot machine, process, and print quality issues across additive manufacturing workflows</li><li>Help maintain a clean, organized, safe, and highly functional prototyping environment<br><br></li></ul><strong>You Might Thrive In This Role If You<br><br></strong><ul><li>Have deep hands-on experience with additive manufacturing systems and enjoy building reliable workflows around physical hardware</li><li>Are highly organized and comfortable managing many concurrent prototype requests in fast-paced environments</li><li>Understand tradeoffs between different printing technologies, materials, tolerances, and post-processing methods</li><li>Enjoy hands-on technical work and are comfortable supporting a broad range of prototype and build activities</li><li>Maintain a high bar for craftsmanship, lab discipline, and part quality<br><br></li></ul><strong>Preferred Qualifications<br><br></strong><ul><li>4+ years of experience operating additive manufacturing systems in prototyping, robotics, product development, or manufacturing environments</li><li>Experience with a variety of 3D printing technologies such as FDM, SLA, SLS, MJF, or PolyJet</li><li>Familiarity with additive manufacturing materials, post-processing methods, and prototype finishing techniques</li><li>Experience supporting hardware engineering teams in fast-paced development environments</li><li>Familiarity with general electromechanical assembly, prototype builds, or robotics hardware systems<br><br></li></ul><strong>Compensation Range: </strong>$266K - $399K USD<br><br><strong>About OpenAI<br><br></strong>OpenAI is an AI research and deployment company dedicated to ensuring that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity.
